Holy Monday: Jesus Overturns the Tables
After his triumphal entry into
Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, Jesus went into the temple and overturned the tables
of the money changers and merchants, telling them, “‘My house shall be called a
house of prayer’; but you are making it a den of robbers.”.
Matthew 21:12, 13
Jesus entered the temple and
drove out all who were selling and buying in the temple, and he overturned the
tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold doves. He
said to them, ‘It is written,
“My house shall be called a house of prayer”;
but you are making it a den of robbers.’
“My house shall be called a house of prayer”;
but you are making it a den of robbers.’
In Merchandising Truth
by Meister Eckhart in the C12 reminds us that our souls are the temple that
must be kept pure for God, and warns us not to bargain with God. This idea is
woven into this prayer reflection.
Truthfully, Jesus,
There are many tables
that need overturning in our lives;
Beneath the veneer of respectability
hide dark feelings and angry judgements
fear and heartless rejections
We know the pain,
of keeping up the facade;
It would be a relief it would be to have it all
Turned over, smashed, and destroyed
So Jesus, today as you meet us,
help us to radically rearrange
the tables of our lives
